National Holidays....needed?

How do an individual celebrate anniversary of his/her hard earned success?? Now,that success may be in the form of his/her own factory, shop, institiute etc etc. But does one sit idle on that day, relax or chill out or go on a holiday? I have hardly known anyone doing that.

So, why a holiday on a day of National significance? The ball should be in the opposite court, in my opinion. The relentless efforts of our freedom fighters, members of our constituent assembly seem to be futile. Celebrating 'Nationally' important days is indeed good but declaring a holiday, seems unreasonable.

Moreover, I abhor both sellers and buyers of the national flags on road side. Days later, same flags are found littering on those very same streets and vechiles and trespassers stepping over it oblivion to their treatment to our National Pride.

Personally, I feel there should not even be a term like 'National Holidays'. The buy and sell of things of National significance must also be banned.

This is my penny of mentation, please pour in your ideas on the same. Your thoughts are important.

  1. Noooo ..don't say that ... i love holidays .. he he .. well this is a very thoughtful and debatable topic..

In my opinion there is no harm in declaring it a holiday ! Its special like festivals, so it gets the same treatment ! I agree to the fact that we have STOPPED valuing it (we enjoy a lot in festivals than in such days) which is really bad ! But if we do not celebrate it as a partial holiday (Partial Holiday - coz schools do conduct flag hoisting and some other shows this day every year) and make ppl aware about the historical significance of this day , i don't think it will be celebrated with any enthusiasm (what ever is left today) ; because it will be like any other day with all the mundane things to do !

About the flag that are being thrown at the road side ... i absolutely condemn it...IFF the flag sellers throw it...but if we are the one's who are throwing it then i guess its our problem and not of the one who sells it ! Its really a shame seeing our flags being spitted on , walked upon in the road side .. Its an amazing point that you have raised ! A very nice topic indeed ! Keep posting on such wonderful topics ... it surely makes us think !

  3. I feel every nation is in a dire need of national holidays. These national events are the ones that have the power to unite the whole nation of billion plus population with one goal.It is really a shame that we have started losing this flavour of national holidays. These national events should always be celebrated to remind us of what it took for our ancestors to gain freedom. What way these are celebrated is for us to decide.I feel a lot can be done on these days like may be coming up with public cleanliness drives where common people take up the charge of cleaning the roads, removing the litter.etc.

And most importantly for the national flag seen lying on the roads once the celebration is over,I think that the Government could come up with a new law limiting the printing of flags.Once a limited numbers of flags are in circulation may be people will value/respect it and not throw it away after the celebration is over. One more thing that could be done is that only the national tricolor printed on cloth could be sold rather than the paper one...so that it can be used for years with washing..!!!

I also feel that rather than cutting back on National Holidays we could cut back some other holidays..but for a religious population like the one in India..this seems highly improbable.
